This issue of Evam covers an impressive cross section of scholarly currents including a visually rich feature on Ajanta and a rejoinder to nobel laureate Amartya Sen's ill-considered article on the Gita. The recurrent theme of this issue is of course the interrelation between Hinduism and Buddhism. In the West, unfortunately, Buddhism is usually studied in isolation and Robert A F Thurman's opening address in thisvolume goes a long way to redress this misreading. Sunthar and Elizabeth Visuvalingam's dissertation on Pachali Bahirava in Nepal, fits in well with the Hindu-Buddhist theme of this issue as does Nupur Chaudhuri and Rajat Kanta Ray's extraordinary article on the Bauls of Bengal. |
